Commodore’s May Update

May 2024 SHYC Commodore’s Post

Hi Everyone –

Happy Memorial Day weekend!  As a Past Commodore once said to me, this is the time of year we “land the plane” for the Club.  Well, to keep the metaphor going, we’re certainly getting the wheels closer to the ground as each day goes by!  As I write, there are 3 weeks until Opening day!

I want to thank everyone who attended the work party.  We had a fantastic turnout – one of the best I can remember – and all substantial work was done in about 45 minutes!  Again, thank you for the time and effort!  Its great to see so much volunteer energy.

Please see the following updates, announcements and schedules:

Here is an excerpt from the program description:

This year’s SHYC instructional sailing program for women will offer a

and enhancing enjoyment of the sport of sailing. All skill levels are welcome. No prior sailing
experience is required.

News from the Treasurer….

Please see the following from Treasurer Colin Cooper:

We recently migrated to a new cloud-based accounting system. The transition has gone smoothly to date although there are still some challenges to work through. The new system eventually will facilitate electronic payment of invoices, but we are not planning to activate that functionality until the 2025 season. While some invoices may indicate the possibility of electronic payment, for this summer we still need members to remit payment by check to PO Box 124, Guilford, CT 06437. To the few members who still haven’t paid their 2024 summer dues invoice that was sent out on February 24, 2024, please do so at your earliest convenience.

And finally, to assess or not to assess?

As most of us know, around this time of year we determine the amount of a capital assessment (dollars we collect from the membership) needed to either replace, add or maintain the assets of the Club and the Clubhouse.  This, typically, is a yearly event.  I’m happy to report that this year (at least in this moment of time) we will not need any assessment.  HOWEVER, please note – that this is a rarity and is simply a byproduct of timing of capital needs of the Club.  I fully expect that we will need an assessment next year as its very atypical for us not to have capital needs at this time of year.  But, we’ll enjoy the good news and hope nothing really expensive breaks in the next few weeks!

That’s it for now.  Enjoy the rest of your long weekend and looking forward to seeing everyone on Opening Day!
