Summer’s almost here! And the proper introduction to summer is the annual Spring Work Day, scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday, May 30. It’s a great opportunity to meet fellow members and help get the club ready for the summer season. Bring your work gloves and dive in.
In other exciting news, House Chair Harlan Fichtenholtz has recruited Supreme Seafood to take over management of the Galley. They have long experience with club food operations and will be serving up some new menu items, as well as the old favorites, to hungry club members.
You will also notice some improvements to the facilities courtesy of our landlord, the Sachems Head Yacht Club Corporation, headed by former Commodore Mike McNiff, in coordination with House and Vice Commodore Shane Walden. They refinished the wood floors and installed two Big Ass Fans in the ballroom to circulate the air during club events. There was also extensive repainting upstairs and down.
Thad Ozyck has once again hired a top-notch staff for youth sailing, and the schedule is on the SHYC.club website. Parents, sign up your kids for another season of learning and fun. And adults, please sign up for Race Committee with Fleet Captain Stuart Baldwin. RC duty is a fun way to get on the water for a couple of hours and provide an essential service to the club. No experience needed, just a cheery attitude and willingness to help.
Harbor Manager Eric Davidson has begun raising moorings. As always, it’s up to you to find that mooring ball you meant to clean and paint last fall, get it fixed up and attach it to your mooring.
As noted before, the tennis courts will be an active construction zone all summer, with pedestrian access only. DO NOT park on Walden Hill Road or anywhere with yellow lines. We must remain good neighbors with the Sachems Head Association. That also means parking legally on Chimney Corner Circle. If there’s any question, please park on Colonial Road and enjoy a pleasant walk across the Dave Fisher Bridge.
Opening Day will be June 20, with a “soft opening” of the club and Galley anticipated at least one weekend before. Launch service will be available the two weekends before June 20 from 0800-1700. More details to come in my June letter.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the SHYC moms, and let’s get ready to hit the water!
Dan Fisher
SHYC Commodore
